This is our 5 minute Podcast for the Creative Media Analysis course. Since we have set up this blog, we thought we should share our audio on here as well. We explain in our own words what we think media convergence is. Hope you enjoy! :)
‘A student dream of a more connected world’
A very interesting documentary came on BBC 2 called ‘Mark Zuckerbergs: Inside Facebook’ which details the rise of facebook and how it became what it became today. Its crazy to think in the past three years how much the company has grown and how popular the company is now.
‘When you put technology behind the power of who are as people the world changes.’ - Sheryl Sandberg. This is a very interesting quote saying even though technology is made for consumers, it is consumers that really have the power of technology and its future.
Something I didn’t know too much of what facebook advertising techniques. As we enter all our information on facebook and we write whatever we like on our page. All this information is taken to find advertisements that will interest you. Just a simple word you type on your page, facebook will recommend a page for you to like. Pages have been created as well for business for them to make a page in which users can ‘like’. Pressing like you are automatically signed up to their news feed and messages, also the page acts as a forum. This is a great tool for business to get an exact of their audience.
‘Once and a while a business comes along which defines an era by doing something very new and very big. In this case its changing the way that hundreds of millions of people talk to each other.’
Matthew Wright - Cracking of Joke about a Teenage boy Murder Live TV.
Again another well known TV Presenter has said something he shouldn’t. A week after the Jeremy Clarkson fiasco on the BBC’s ‘The One Show’ no one in the media seems to realise what they are saying is being transmitted all over the UK and have they had any form of media training???
He said and I quote:
“There’s been another murder.” (Source from the metro)
In a Scottish accent on live TV, being a debate show which talks about issues and general news stories from all over the world was Matthew Wright right to say what he said on such a sensitive issue such as a murder. Making references to the nationality of the boy who died was a stupid mistake to do , but to add the malicious spin of Taggert( popular Murder Drama on ITV) was wrong.
The show itself is tongue and cheek and I enjoy watching it… but i may stay clear of it now due to the fact that Matthew crossed the line from tongue and cheek to being childish and hurtful. The public are calling for him to be sacked but he has made a full apology.
How bands are starting to use the Internet as a Platform to communicate and socialise with fans.
Supercity - the band Mcfly’s website is a subscription based website where fans from all over the world either pay a monthly or annual fee to get more involved with the band and other fans. Also according to your status on the site… for your money you get annual treats including pre-sale to tour tickets, meet and greats with the band and exclusive video content and live web chats. Supercity did win a national award for the site in 2011
The Clarkson incident
It’s been all over the news so I won’t bore you with a long spiel about how offensive that was.
But I’ve noticed how the media now has got the opportunity to get news to the masses in such a short space of time. The story broke on Wednesday night and it was instantly picked up by the media. Youtube clips of the actual event were live in just a few hours, so everyone all over the world could see what he said.
My question would be:
1)How did the BBC an institution that prides itself to provide quality entertainment and impartiality allow someone like Mr Clarkson express such views on prime time TV?
2) Are they going to allow Mr Clarkson continue to appear on the BBC after what he said?
It seems like there are rules for one person and another rule for everyone else! And has no one learnt from their mistakes after the Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross fiasco?
It seems to me you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t!!!
Are we going to forgive and forget?
Or are we going to serve someone like him his notice?
Viral video and their affects.
A small video from an indecent on a tram became such a viral video is so much more then that. The woman known as Miss. West lost her job days after and is now facing legal action of public order offence and could spend Christmas behind bars as well as death threats with her home address being circled around social networking sites.
The video was recorded unknowingly and the camera is hidden from the woman. Of course the woman may have acted differently weather she had known she was being recording. But at the same time she might not have, as all she knew was it was a small video on someones mobile phone. She would have not known the outcome of how quick a small video can become so viral thanks to social networking. This massive scale of how big that small video could get is still unknown to a lot of people, even though so many previous viral videos have had the same outcome of this video.
Is this not worrying that privacy has really gone? You could be caught doing the smallest of things and your life could have such a turn around. I heard of cases such as someone losing their because of something they posted on their facebook page months ago.
This is becoming a great worry for people that even if you choose not to be online or even associate yourself with the online community, you will still end up having something in printed online. For example, people who don’t have a facebook account their name could still be tagged in a picture on facebook.
With the rise of being online and pushing people join to be ‘more’ connected with their friends this is a big challenge the creative industry will have to face.
